The objectives of internal parasite control in horses have changed substantially since the era of emphasis on chemical intervention. The focus on advice has shifted from complete elimination of parasites and/or prevention of clinical disease through interval-based treatments to maintaining “manageable” levels of infection through more strategic and targeted approaches. Regardless of geography or climatic conditions, modern objectives should be overarching.

Nutrition plays a significant role in equine health, often more than many owners realise. Feeding horses an improper diet, akin to human junk food or unsuitable pasture, can lead to chronic inflammation as the body reacts to these ingredients as if they are pathogens.

Today, EGUS is no longer considered a single disease, but rather two distinct conditions: Equine Squamous Gastric Disease (ESGD) and Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD).
This modern distinction helps owners and veterinarians make more accurate diagnoses and implement more effective management strategies.
